  Why was the vernacular press act passed in 1878?

The Vernacular Press act 1878 was brought in India by British Government by the following reasons; 

(i) The British government wanted to suppress the voice of the press.

(ii) By bringing this law, they wanted to impose censorship on freedom of press and expression.

(iii) He wanted to crush the Indian freedom struggle.

(iv) Editors who did not follow this law of the government were locked in their presses and machines were confiscated.
